Bread Pudding
I bake my own poppy seed egg bread just to make this pudding but you can certainly use a store-bought loaf. Since bread cubes are hard to measure, I use a kitchen scale to get the exact weight. This pudding is so good, it doesn't need any topping. - Jenny Jones
Ingredients:
- 6 oz. egg bread cut into 1-inch cubes (about 5 cups)
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 cup + 1 Tablespoon sugar
- 2 cups milk (whole milk or low fat)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- a pinch of nutmeg
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Place bread cubes into an eight-inch round baking dish with tall sides.
- With an electric mixer, beat eggs & sugar on medium-high speed. Beat until thick & pale, about 5 minutes.
- On low speed, stir in milk, vanilla and nutmeg.
- Pour mixture over bread and let stand 5 minutes, or longer while the oven heats up. Push bread down a few times with a spoon.
- Bake, uncovered, for 40 minutes.
I had some stale Artisan bread (my fav in any flavor) and bau (Chinese bread balls) and old wrinkled cherries (that were still good. Just not pretty) Hopefully I didn’t stir too much …we shall see…cooking now
Bao. I mixed it too much, so no custard. Mine needed more sugar
I just made bread pudding for the first time using homemade egg bread that had gone stale. Haven’t tried it yet as it is too hot just out of the oven. Only made one addition to the recipe, I added two handfuls off frozen blueberries. Pudding looks super delicious.
Can I use regular white bread ?
You are the best Jenny.
Loved this one!!
I added golden raisins and a little rum!
Hugs!

Please, use/give metric system measurements. I don”t use oz, cups…
At least I could google oz but there a myriad types of cups. Not to mention how wrong is to measure solids with volumetric measures.
The whole world except US uses the metric system.
The best I can do is the metric conversion chart I put together in my blog: https://www.jennycancook.com/category/a-metric-conversion-chart/
Thank goodness for that – no metric for good old US of A !!!
I actually learned both ways of measuring in elementary school. I hope you realize that not all Americans are how to say sheltered.
Most measuring CUPS now days have both Metric and Ounces & Cups… Scales have the same ability… Cheers
Can I add Raisins and/or Nuts? Thank You, Love Your Recipes 🙂
Yes, definitely.
Can I use wheat bread?
I would not suggest whole wheat bread for bread pudding. It needs a soft bread.
What’s egg bread Jenny?
Sorry…

Challah bread There is a white (water) loaf
and there is a yellow (egg) this is the one you want.
Costco sells them by two, not sure if that is the egg one.
You can go to a Jewish bakery, you will have to check
the days they make it.
Mike
6oz egg bread???
Yes.
Add some sweet potato or pumpkin…it’s awesome!
I will try this with the egg bread I will be getting from the Christmas Bake sale at my Greek Orthodox church. You probably know the Greek bread I am talking about. Bread pudding is the first thing I learned to bake when I was only five years old and we had a wood stove. I can eat the whole thing in one day. Not super healthy , but I only make it once or twice a year. True comfort food.
